Heading East

July 4

We have a nice tailwind, though not as strong as yesterday. It's giving us a nice milage boost. It's the fourth of July, but so far, no signs of Old Glory waving. We are seeing very few USA tourists here.

We'll celebrate tonight with hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill.

Today was another day of driving through beautiful countryside.

We didn't take the interstate because we knew the smaller road would be more interesting. The land was very green and when the soil was turned over it was rich and dark. Lots of agriculture, both cattle and field crops.

There were lots of ponds with reeds and red-wing blackbirds in them, and in some places the foliage and crops looked quite lush, although the area doesn't get a lot of annual rainfall.

The sky was huge because of the fairly flat land, and full of puffy white clouds.

It was like being on a green plate with a blue and white bowl turned upside down over you. While stopped at a gas station we glanced across the street and spied this statue of a buffalo.

We couldn't find anything about it, so don't know if it is an official "World's Largest," but it was so big we are including it anyway. We stopped at the tiny town of Cut Knife to see yet another addition to the "World's Largest" list, an enormous tomahawk.

There was also a pretty church, and a corner restaurant.

A few miles later we paused in Battleford, where there are some lovely Victorian civic buildings.

We are camped at the Glenburn Regional Park, on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River next to a beer hall (appropriate for the 4th of July).

Before supper we watched thundershowers circle us, but so far, no rain.

Rain came in buckets by the time the pictures were added.

By the way (that's BTW for all you youngsters or very hip oldsters), Bill says that I use the word "sad" too much and you will think I'm severely depressed. Just the opposite! There's not a depressed cell in me! So, please don't start sending Valium or anything, Mrs. Robinson, keep it for someone who really needs it. I promise I'll try to find a better word to use.
